Forget Kylie, Meet Aitana: The Virtual Influencer Bringing Brands Big Bucks
Aitana Virtual Influencer
AI is revolutionizing influencer marketing by introducing virtual influencers created using artificial intelligence tools. These synthetic characters offer high performance, lower costs, and super-specific targeting for advertisers.
For instance, Aitana, a virtual influencer, was created by an agency called The Clueless, which saw an opportunity to disrupt the overinflated market of human influencers. The emergence of virtual influencers has led to concerns among human influencers about their income being cannibalized.
However, the advertising industry, which is premised on inauthenticity, sees this as a way to boost ad recall and decrease the cost per person recalling seeing ads. For example, an H&M ad campaign featuring a virtual influencer resulted in an 11x increase in ad recall and a 91% decrease in cost per person recalling seeing ads. This new form of advertising situates virtual influencers as a new trick for juicing certain campaign metrics, rather than a replacement for human influencers. It also raises questions about the authenticity of AI-generated content and its potential to encroach on various creative industries.
Trend Insights
The use of AI in influencer marketing is promising, but it also presents challenges such as the potential for misinformation in AI-generated content. Overall, AI is reshaping the influencer marketing landscape, offering new creative avenues and opportunities for brands to connect with their target demographics in innovative ways.

Google’s saying bye bye to cookies!
Google has disabled cookies for 1% of its users, marking the first step in its plan to phase out third-party cookies in Chrome by the end of the year. Cookies are one of the primary ways that tech companies track user behavior online, and their use has raised privacy concerns.
Google's Privacy Sandbox project aims to replace third-party cookies with a new way to track users that harvests data in a way that is better for privacy. However, privacy advocates are not all thrilled about Chrome's new data regime. The EFF recommends that Chrome users install its Privacy Badger browser extension, a tool that disables Chrome's new tracking settings automatically and blocks all kinds of other data harvesting as you use the web.
Trend Insights
To spot if your cookies bid adieu, keep an eye out for a Chrome popup on “Tracking Protection” and a little eyeball logo in the URL bar. This move might break a few sites, but Chrome’s got backup plans to fix glitches. Plus, in your browser settings, check under “Privacy and security” for toggles about cookies. If they've mysteriously changed, congrats! You might be in the cookieless club.

Google's New AI Platform: Gemini Unveiled!
Gemini AI
Google has launched Gemini, a new generative AI platform that can handle text, images, audio, and video all at once. Gemini comes in three versions: Ultra, Pro, and Nano, each designed for different needs and levels of performance.
Google claims that Gemini Pro is smarter than OpenAI's GPT-4, one of the models behind ChatGPT. However, some early impressions haven't been great, with users and academics pointing out that Gemini Pro tends to get basic facts wrong, struggles with translations, and gives poor coding suggestions.
Gemini Pro is accessible via Vertex AI and Google AI Studio. Vertex AI resembles Azure's deployment motif, where you deploy your own model instances. Google AI Studio provides a single endpoint authorized with an API token. Gemini Pro is free to use in Bard and, for now, AI Studio and Vertex AI. Once Gemini Pro exits preview in Vertex, the model will cost $0.0025 per character while output will cost $0.00005 per character.

AI Art Generators Face Lawsuit: A Comprehensive Analysis.
A trio of artists have filed a lawsuit against Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt, alleging copyright infringement due to the use of AI art generators. The artists claim that these organizations have trained their AI tools on five billion images scraped from the web without the consent of the original artists. This lawsuit, filed by attorney Matthew Butterick and the Joseph Saveri Law Firm, aims to make AI fair and ethically responsible for everyone.
The capacity of AI art tools like Stable Diffusion to flood the market with infringing images will inflict permanent damage on the market for art and artists. The lawsuit seeks to address this issue and ensure that AI art generators respect the rights of artists.
The lawsuit has been criticized for containing technical inaccuracies, such as the claim that AI art models store compressed copies of copyrighted training images and recombine them. In reality, AI art models do not store images but rather mathematical representations of patterns collected from the images. The software does not create images by piecing together bits of images in the form of a collage but rather creates pictures from scratch based on these mathematical representations.
The Verge has reached out to Matthew Butterick, Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt for comment and will update the story if they hear back.
